Türkiye · First visit
Istanbul in 4 days
Two continents. Ferry rides. Layers of history.
Start with the historic peninsula, then give the bazaars, Beyoğlu and the Asian side their own days. A few ferry crossings and long meal breaks make the city easier to enjoy.

Your four-day route.
Choose a day · suggested times
Day 1 · A compact route with time for the major sights
The historic peninsula
Sultanahmet → Hagia Sophia → Basilica Cistern
Sultanahmet Square & the Hippodrome
Begin outdoors to understand the area before stepping into its busiest sights.
Blue Mosque
Visit respectfully outside prayer closures, following the current dress and access rules.
Hagia Sophia
Choose the official visitor experience or enjoy the exterior if a lighter day suits your group.
A Sultanahmet lunch break
Pause for a meal and rest before another indoor visit.
Basilica Cistern
Allow time for the underground space and its atmosphere, checking the operator's current tickets.
Eat nearby.
Try a simple köfte or vegetable-based lunch, then choose a relaxed dinner near your hotel. There is no need to add a cross-city food trip on this first day.
Good to know today
Mosque access changes around prayers. Hagia Sophia's visitor route and admission arrangements differ from worship access; verify current instructions before visiting.
If plans change
Keep the cistern and a longer indoor lunch during rain. Move mosque visits around the actual prayer and visitor schedules.
Day 2 · A long palace morning, an adjustable afternoon
Palace courtyards & the bazaars
Topkapı → Gülhane → Grand Bazaar → Eminönü
Topkapı Palace
Choose the ticket that covers the sections you want, then allow a generous morning for the palace.
Gülhane & a lunch break
Slow down after the palace with some greenery and a meal nearby.
Grand Bazaar
Browse a few lanes with a meeting point agreed in advance. Shopping is optional, not another task to complete.
Spice Bazaar & Eminönü
Continue towards the waterfront, with a short tram ride or a walk depending on your energy.
Eat nearby.
A lokanta lunch is an easy way to compare dishes. Finish with tea and something sweet near Eminönü, or choose a waterfront meal after checking the menu.
Good to know today
Topkapı closes on Tuesdays. Bazaar trading days can vary; keep market stops flexible and check holiday arrangements before setting out.
If plans change
Give the palace and covered market areas more time, leaving the park and waterfront for a clearer day.
Day 3 · A neighbourhood day with an optional art stop
Galata, Karaköy & Beyoğlu
Galata → Karaköy → Tophane → İstiklal
Galata streets & the tower exterior
Explore around the tower before the busiest part of the day. Going inside is an optional paid addition.
Karaköy cafés & lunch
Walk down towards the water and take a long lunch break in the neighbourhood.
Istanbul Modern or the waterfront
Choose a current exhibition or keep the afternoon outdoors, rather than automatically doing both.
Beyoğlu & İstiklal Avenue
Return uphill using transport if useful, then explore the avenue and its side streets before dinner.
Eat nearby.
Choose a Karaköy café meal or a simple local lunch, then compare meyhane-style shared plates and other dinner options around Beyoğlu.
Good to know today
This route includes hills. Use public transport for an uphill stretch and check museum opening days if choosing the indoor visit.
If plans change
Choose Istanbul Modern and indoor café stops, replacing the longer outdoor wander if it is wet or windy.
Day 4 · Food, neighbourhood streets and a seaside pause
Across to Kadıköy & Moda
European-side ferry → Kadıköy → Moda
A scheduled ferry to Kadıköy
Choose a departure pier that suits your hotel and let the crossing be part of the morning.
Kadıköy market streets
Browse food shops and local streets before settling on lunch.
A long Kadıköy lunch
Choose a lokanta meal, a café lunch or shared dishes according to the group's preferences.
Moda waterfront & a final tea
Finish with a seaside walk, then return with plenty of time for luggage and onward travel.
Eat nearby.
This is the day to leave room for snacks: a market lunch, tea and a pastry or dessert in Moda. Pick what suits your diet rather than ordering every local speciality.
Good to know today
Check Şehir Hatları's current sailing times and allow a large return buffer if departing today. Ferry services can change with weather.
If plans change
If ferry conditions are poor, swap with the palace or museum day. For an early flight, move Kadıköy earlier rather than rushing the return.
Showing day 1: The historic peninsula
A little local direction.
Where to stay
Sultanahmet suits an early start at the historic sights. Karaköy or Galata suits café and ferry access, but check slopes and the walk with luggage before choosing a hotel.
Getting around
Combine walking, trams and scheduled ferries. Check the operator's actual route and departure time; a useful cross-city ferry can also provide some of the trip's best views.
What to pack
Walking shoes with grip for slopes and cobbles, layers for ferry decks, and modest clothing for mosque visits. Follow each religious site's visitor instructions.
